NBA Draft 2009 Wrap-Up, Grades and Trades

From the guy who invented the ‘man diary’ as viable option for sports writers: Bill Simmons delivers his draft diary.

Weird coincidence Pt. 1: It was brought to our attention by Bill Simmons that #4 pick Tyreke Evans was reportedly the getaway driver in a drive-by shooting while in high school. Meanwhile, a month ago we gave Tyreke Evans the following two word-scouting report: “Freaky Driver”.

Chad Ford has the balls to grade every team’s draft the day after.

NBA Draft.net grades the draft also.

Chris Mannix of SI.com has winners and losers from the draft.

Also from SI: Luke Winn was behind the scenes at the draft and overheard the quote of the day from the always witty Terrence Williams. Williams, to Ricky Rubio, backstage: “You’re nervous? Why are you nervous, when you’ve been making money since you were 11?”

Plus Ian Thomsen weighs in with draft thoughts.

Lang Whitaker of Slam Online was also reporting live from the draft. He reports the best observation was “Separated at Birth: Ricky Rubio and Chainsaw from “Summer School.”

The Warriors drafted fan favorite Stephen Curry, but will they keep him or ship him to The Suns for Amare Stoudamire?

Yahoo Sports has winners and losers from the draft, and a strange twitter message from coach Seth Greenberg.

As for own mock draft, we didn’t have a spectacular year nailing pick by pick  but we were one of the only sites that correctly predicted the top ten players to be drafted…so decent job, us!

(To be fair, some draft writers–ahem, Chad Ford and Jonathan Givony–are sitting in the green room gleaming information from players/agents/sources up until two minutes before the draft begins AND THEN posting a final mock draft…Maybe that’s why they hate mock drafts).

Ed Weiland of HoopsAnalyst.com has some of the most unique and interesting stats analysis of the draft every year, using a lot of player comparisons to past prospects. His full archive is available online so you can see how he rated past prospects.

Today Ed looks at the Power Forwards and he is not a big fan of Jordan Hill.

Jerry Zgoda, Wolves beat writer, thinks they are after Ricky Rubio and Tyreke Evans, but would settle for a new backcourt of Stephen Curry and Evans.

Andy Katz has the latest on Minnesota’s plans, with Memphis wanting both #5 and #6 for #2, or they’ll take Kevin Love back.

Real GM has Christopher Reina’s ‘who I would pick’ mock draft.

Reina is another member of the Jeff Teague bandwagon. So it’s us, Reina, and Doug Gotlieb.

Big Bird Socks and Barbie Backpacks: The T Will Experience

Alan Hahn of Newsday says that Terrence Williams is the most underrated player in the lottery and he’s visiting the Knicks today.

Chad Ford draft buzz talks to Warriors GM, and says Terrence Wiliiams is the ‘most eccentric’ player in the draft. In high school, he would wear Big Bird socks in games and carry his books in a Barbie backpack, according to a blurb from S.I. Just to be different.

Draft Express breaks down the weak shooting guard crop by the numbers. T. Will is all over the board, the best defender, ball-handler, passer, but he has no scoring skills: He shot 43% from the field(and a lot of those makes were dunks),  58% from the free throw line; he is a brick-layer of the highest order. He’s also not much of a slasher: “It doesn’t help that he gets fouled on a meager 9% of his attempts from the field, which limits his efficiency even more.”

New Brandon Jennings mix from Europe which shows some of those dazzling skills that no one else has and a propensity for always going left.

Memphis Commercial Appeal reports a rumor that the Nets are offering Devin Harris for the number two pick? Really?

Netsarescorching suggests the Nets may be looking to move down.

Draft Depot has lots of video links of prospects.

ESPN(Insider) has the John Hollinger prospect rater, which needed some serious tweaking after missing on Derek Rose, O.J. Mayo, Eric Gordon and Anthony Randolph last year.  It loves Ty Lawson, and also Nick Calathes, Austin Daye and Tyreke Evans. Also find it here.

John Hollinger chats.

David Berri of Wages of Wins also loves Ty Lawson, especially over Jonny Flynn.

Ed Weiland of Hoops Analyst is also on the Ty Lawson bandwagon; his excellent in-depth draft preview is on basketball reference blog.

Stat geeks heart Ty Lawson. I like Lawson too, but I wonder if playing on an extremely talented team at UNC helped his overall efficiency(as well as players like Danny Green, who Hollinger loves). Remember last year Hollinger had Kansas’s Mario Chalmers, Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson in his top 10. Obviously Kansas had a lot of talent, which made things easier for everyone.

The Tiers of Chad Ford(Insider) are now available.
